CMP Owl Post 2/7/20

Principal’s Message

Dear CMP Orangevale Parents & Community Members,

Students playing basketball.

On Monday and Wednesday, our basketball teams played at the Carmichael and Elk Grove Campuses. We are so proud of their excellent team spirit and positive attitude. They are all heart! Thank you to our coaches, Ms. Acxa, Mr. Dean, Mr. Randy and Mr. Tom for their love and support of our students!

Mr. Brett Barley, our superintendent, and all of the CMP principals met for three days of intensive planning this week. We were hard at work on staffing, recruitment and budgeting for the 2020-2021 school year. I thank our CMP Orangevale team for all of their hard work and dedication to our students.

Next week we have an Early Release Day on Wednesday. Our teachers will be working on scoring the CAASPP English Language Arts Interim assessments. The results will help teachers in planning instruction. The Interim assessments will also give our teachers an indication of how well our students will perform on the CAASPP summative assessment that they will take in April.

CMP NETWORK-WIDE GOVERNING BOARD ELECTIONS 2020

Parent Representative – Capitol & Shingle Springs

This spring, parents and guardians of CMP students will have the chance to vote for 2 members of the CMP Governing Board.  This memo explains the role of the Governing Board, duties of Board members, and election logistics.  Parents and guardians are encouraged to run for the Board.  The Governing Board currently consists of eight members.  Because all Governing Board members are responsible to, and for, the CMP network as a whole, all CMP parents and guardians (network-wide) may vote for the parent representatives.

Principal’s Message

Dear CMP Orangevale Parents & Community Members,

Next week our 3rd-8th grade students will be taking a practice summative assessment on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. We are taking this time to practice because at the end of each school year, students in California in grade 3 through 8 are required take statewide assessments, also known as summative assessments.

These tests are called summative because they test the sum of what your child learned during the school year. The umbrella term we use to talk about the summative assessments our students take is CAASPP which stands for the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress.

A Message from the Superintendent: December Update Students Dressed for Pajama Day

CMP has been busy with rigorous instruction in classrooms, field trips, campus projects, and celebrations this month. Hopefully some of these pictures and memories will add a little more joy to your holiday season. Thanks again for all you do and see you in 2020!

Principal’s Message

Dear CMP Orangevale Parents & Community Members,

We are happy to report that we see a positive growth trend schoolwide on the i-Ready English Language Arts and Math Diagnostics that each student completed last week. On Wednesday, we met as a team to review our data and make decisions about next lessons for students. i-Ready is an online program for reading and mathematics that CMP is implementing as a supplement to our Montessori curriculum. i-Ready Diagnostics help your child’s teacher determine your child’s needs, personalize their learning, and monitor progress throughout the school year.

A Message from the Superintendent: November Update CM Thanksiving Festivity

Dear CMP Community,

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you all have some time to rest and relax with loved ones this week. As we all reflect on what we're thankful for there are a few things that rise to the very top of my list. In no particular order:

CMP Families

Our families bring so much to CMP. Your commitment to CMP through classroom volunteering, field trip participation, assisting with student enrichment opportunities, and organizing fundraisers are just a few examples of how parents help to make CMP a unique and special place.

CMP Teachers

The driving force behind every exceptional CMP classroom is a passionate and highly effective teacher. Our teachers pour their hearts and souls into our students every day. We ask a lot of them and they always deliver. Whether it's holding not just one but two credentials (Montessori and California Teaching Credentials), serving on different committees, developing rigorous and engaging lessons, or mentoring new team members our teachers are always up to the task.

Superintendent's Message Superintendent

Dear CMP Community,

The first day of school is here and we are excited to welcome you all back tomorrow.  It's going to be a great year.  At each school there will be an opportunity for a "First Day of School Photo".  Feel free to snap a picture and hashtag #CMPFirstDayOfSchool if you're interested.

Also, we had a Board meeting last night.  Some highlights included:

  • Adoption of our Local Control Accountability Plans and budgets.
  • Election of the Board Chair, Vice President, and Treasurer.  Thank you to Rob Henderson (Board Chair), Scott Porter (Vice President), and Tamika L'Ecluse (Treasurer) for agreeing to serve this year!
  • Approval of our new Middle School Science program.
  • Staff recognition of Carrie Klagenberg, Richard Stanley, Becky Marsolais, Cherie Cooney, Lisa Coker, and the Carmichael Administrative team for important projects they lead over the summer.
Superintendent's Message

Dear CMP Families,

We hope you all had a great first day of school! We were all so excited to welcome you back. I had a chance to visit every school today to celebrate the beginning of the school year with our school staff. Our central office also delivered "welcome back breakfasts" to teachers at each campus.

While we were out at our schools we took some silly photos with the props we left out for students and families. Even some of our Board members got in on the fun. Enjoy!

Superintendent's Message Brett Barley, Superintendent

Dear CMP Community,

Last Friday I mentioned that we’ve been busy this summer on school site upgrades.  A picture is worth a thousand words. Here are a few of those projects:

A Message from the Executive Director: Happy Fourth of July MTC Training at SS

Happy Fourth of July!

My first day as California Montessori Project’s Superintendent was July 1st. I spent July 1st and 2nd participating in Montessori training at the training center in Shingle Springs. It was inspiring to see so many outstanding educators sharpening their Montessori skills.

I’m looking forward to continuing to prepare for another fantastic school year upon our return from the holiday weekend!

A Message from the Executive Director: "15 Wonderful Years" Thank you Message - Summer Thymes

30 June 2019

"15 Wonderful Years"

Dear CMP Community Members,

Early Sunday morning, I stopped by my favorite coffee  shop to grab a coffee to-go.  On the door was a large sign  stating "thank you for 15 wonderful years," announcing "Today is our last day."  Of course, I  was instantly struck by the message.  As CMP's Executive Director for 15 wonderful years, today (June 30)  is MY last day, as well!

A Message from the Executive Director: WHAT REALLY MATTERS? Executive Director - Gary Bowman

24 June 2019

WHAT REALLY MATTERS!

Dear CMP Community Members,

I have had the privilege of meeting with CMP stakeholders over the past several months, receiving input on how CMP can leverage resources to improve student outcomes. Groups of students, staff and parents provided a great array of ideas, including: additional art, music, dance and drama programs; more hands-on-science; gardening projects; field trips; student government; better restrooms; and teacher retention. We will be addressing all of these items in this year’s LCAP (Local Control Accountability Plan).

A Message from the Executive Director Executive Director - Gary Bowman

12 June 2019

Dear members of the CMP Community,

This past week, each of our CMP campuses has held Graduation Ceremonies for our 8th Grade Class of 2019.  For the previous 16 years, I have had the great honor of attending these ceremonies throughout our network.  I have never been more proud of our CMP community than I am in this moment.

I am inspired by the speeches and songs by our talented students, as well as their accomplishments.  Most of all, I am touched by their sense of community (“Ohana”).

A Message from the Executive Director Gary Bowman - Executive Director

CONGRATULATIONS, CMP Students, Staff and Families, for a fantastic 2018-19 school year.

And, to CMP’s 8th Grade Graduates, I acknowledge, with great joy, your exceptional accomplishments!  This is YOUR moment to savor.  You belong to a very special learning community.  Some of you have been part of the CMP community for just a few years, while many of you have enjoyed CMP’s full Kindergarten-8th Grade continuum.

A Message from the Executive Director: Why Do We Fundraise for Our CMP Schools? Executive Director - Gary Bowman

Superintendent’s Message - May 28, 2019

“Why Do We Fundraise for Our CMP Schools?”

I was asked this question by a parent during one of our recent LCAP Stakeholder Input Sessions.  Great question, btw, and thanks for asking!  Here are a few thoughts:

First, and foremost, CMP’s school leaders are committed to providing the highest level of service to students, staff and families as we prioritize Montessori Methodology throughout our network.  We value our teaching assistants and our small class-sizes.  We offer our certificated staff a competitive compensatory package.  And, last, but not least, we recognize the importance of safe and clean facilities, and the amenities offered at each site.

A Message from the Executive Director: Charter Renewal Gary Bowman, Kim Zawilski and Stephanie Garretson after Charter Renewal

16 May 2019

Dear CMP Community,

I am very excited to share the Buckeye Union School District Board (BUSD) unanimously approved the Charter Renewal for CMP-Shingle Springs at Wednesday night’s Board meeting.  The new authorization is effective July 1, 2019 and extends through June 30, 2024.

The BUSD Board spoke glowingly of our program and operations, as well as the spirit of collaboration that is the foundation of the relationship between BUSD and CMP.

A Message from the Executive Director Gary Bowman, Executive Director and Brett Barley

15 May 2019

This past Monday evening, the California Montessori Project Governing Board unanimously approved the hiring of Brett Barley as CMP’s new Executive Director/Superintendent.  Brett’s first official day will be July 1st (at that time I will assume a consulting role with CMP through August).

Brett comes from a family of educators, his wife is a teacher, and he is a former elementary school teacher. This past year Brett served as Superintendent of Wonderful College Prep Academy in the Central Valley.

I have some important, and exciting, news to share with you, regarding Principal Kim Aldridge and Dean Maria Ostendorf.

Kim Aldridge has accepted a new position at the CMP-Elk Grove campus on Elk Grove Blvd., where she will serve as the Site Administrator/Policies & Procedures Coordinator.  She has faithfully served both the Carmichael and Orangevale communities for the past 18 years.  This new position will allow Ms. Kim to provide network-level leadership in a critical oversight role.

3 May 2019

Good Day, CMP Friends,

Earlier this week I had the great pleasure of starting this year’s round of gathering ‘LCAP Stakeholder Input.’  In coming weeks, I will be visiting all of our CMP campuses, and meeting with students, staff and parents to explore ideas that support quality education for all CMP students.

In the course of these presentations, we will be re-visiting CMP’s Mission and Vision, which capture the essence of our program.  Please, prepare for our meetings by reviewing our statements, as follow.  I look forward to meeting with you!

A Message from the Executive Director Gary Bowman - Executive Director

8 April 2019

Good Day, CMP Community Members,

First, thank YOU for your support of California Montessori Project!  I am grateful for the opportunity to serve alongside this outstanding group of staff, students and parents!

Being the Executive Director/Superintendent of CMP for 15 years has been an incredible opportunity, and, of course, a tremendous challenge.  Part of that challenge is navigating, and, as possible, de-fusing, legislation designed to destroy the Charter School movement in California.

A Message from the Executive Director: Fight the Good Fight…With Respect, Civility and Dignity Gary Bowman - Executive Director

15 March 2019

“Fight the Good Fight…With Respect, Civility and Dignity”

In recent months, I have attended Charter School Conferences and Legal Forums, and have learned about the latest legislative proposals which would dramatically impact California’s Charter School Movement (indeed, supporters of Charter Schools have reason to be concerned about pending Assembly Bills 1505, 1506, 1507 and 1508).

I would state, there has NEVER been a time when the CMP community has NOT fought for the opportunity “to offer a quality, tuition-free Montessori Education that challenges our students to reach their full potential.”

Some classes did experiment presentations, and outside groups had interesting displays. Thank you to Intel for the robotics, parents for bringing and demonstrating the 3D printer, origami & snow melt experiment. Appreciation also goes to Fish & Game and the Girl Scouts.

The Expo was directed by teacher, Anika Greene. Parent volunteers were present to assist the student visitors, and each class created beautiful animal murals to decorate the MP Room, coordinated by art & music teacher, Ally Webb.

A Message from the Executive Director: It Starts with Me... Together We Get to the Heart of It

11 February 2019

“It Starts with Me…”

Good Day, Dear Members of the CMP Community,

Our stakeholders, including students, staff, families and associates, continue to amaze me with their passion for, and commitment to, CMP.  I often hear references to the ‘spirit’ or ‘heart’ of the school as the stand-out characteristic.  I agree - and, cite this as the primary contributor to the joy I have experienced in serving the CMP community for the past 15 years.

Our Charter documents affirm the importance of that value, with the expectation that our children will contribute to “a better society and a peaceful world.”  I believe it is safe to say that this is a community value, which challenges each of us to find opportunities to promote respect in every circumstance, and to always seek peaceful and respectful resolution in the midst of conflict.

Orangevale Middle School Adventures ~ The Special Student Experiences of the Montessori Middle School Program

Article by Middle School Teacher, Jen Foxx-Smith

In Maria Montessori’s writing about adolescent education, she wrote passionately about the importance of getting the emerging adulthood soul out into the world to experience learning new things, to take care of oneself, and to see new sights.  During the Orientation Cycle and Cycle One this school year we have been doing just that with two Northern California adventures.

New CMP Owl Post 10-26-18

In today's CMP Owl Post:

Dr. Montessori's Character Education

“Peace Education” is a major component of Montessori’s pedagogy. In her view, education was not an end in itself, but rather the means by which global change was (and is) created. By enabling children to discover facts and wrestle with difficult situations for themselves, the Montessori Method is intended to create future human beings that are capable of tackling the world’s problems. At the same time, the emphasis on character development, care of others, care of the environment, and grace and courtesy are intended to make those future world changers into ones who will do so responsibly and compassionately.

On the International Day of Peace, this quote by Dr. Montessori reminded us that the “peace” her education system was designed to create was not simply the lack of obvious conflict, but an active and ongoing commitment to work for fairness and equity - the things that make true peace possible.

A Very Special Evening Principal’s Café

Orangevale Campus parents are invited by principal, Kim Aldridge, to join her for a great opportunity to have an open dialogue with MaryEllen Kordas.

MaryEllen’s career in Montessori education spans 40 years.  She served on the board of the American Montessori Society recently as president and served as a member of the MPPI Council (Montessori Public Policy Initiative).  In addition to that, she provides consulting services to schools, boards, and staff (MEK Consultants), and was the founding president of the board of a Montessori Charter School in Vista, California.

A Message from the Executive Director Gary Bowman - Executive Director

Dear CMP Learning Community,

CMP’s monthly Board Meeting was hosted at our CMP-Shingle Springs campus on Monday, October 8th.  The Board approved Melissa (Herman) Goude, as the new Teacher Representative, replacing Sara Meece, who has accepted a .5 position as Dean of Students at the American River campus.  Ms. Goude, who has taught lower elementary students at both the Elk Grove and American River campuses, is a graduate of the initial cohort of the American Montessori Society’s ‘Emerging Leaders Fellowship.’

I am very excited to announce that the Board approved a revised compensatory schedule for CMP’s certificated teachers.  This action authorizes CMP to continue honoring our teachers with annual pay increases through June, 2022.  Our teachers are ‘the best’ - it is a privilege to serve them, as they serve our students and families!

CMP-Holiday Card Art Contest world peace image

Once again we find ourselves at the time of year for creating artwork for the CMP Annual Holiday Card.

A Message from the Executive Director Gary Bowman - Executive Director

Dear CMP Learning Community,

DID YOU KNOW?:  The State Legislature passed the Charter Schools Act of 1992, which authorized the creation of charter schools in California.  In 2000, Wheatland Elementary School District approved a single petition from California Montessori Project, allowing CMP to operate its 4 campuses in the greater Sacramento area, through 2006.  In 2001, AB1994 was passed, requiring charter schools to be granted authorization from their ‘districts of residence.’  In 2006, CMP received separate authorizations from Buckeye Union School District, Elk Grove Unified School District, Sacramento City Unified School District, and San Juan Unified School District, allowing CMP to operate our schools within those district boundaries.

CMP-Shingle Springs received an initial 3-year authorization from Buckeye USD, while the remaining CMP schools received 5-year authorizations.  All CMP schools are now on a 5-year cycle, and, accordingly, work closely with the authorizing districts to meet the requirements for renewal, as established in California Education Code.  While there are many elements included in the charter renewal petition, school districts, historically, are largely focused on student achievement and fiscal solvency.

New 2019-2020 School Calendar Survey

Dear Members of our CMP Learning Community,

Thank you for participating in the recent Stakeholder Survey of the 2019-2020 School Calendar.  This survey was designed to gather input regarding the intersession schedule.

Of the 1400 respondents, there was great support for dividing the four weeks of intersession equally, with two weeks at Winter Break and two weeks during Spring Break.  Notably, there were also comments from the community with some common threads, as follows:

  • A preference for a later August start date (August 14, 2019 vs. August 7, 2019)
  • A preference for a longer Summer Break
  • A preference for a shorter Spring Break

A Message from the Executive Director

13 September 2018

Dear CMP Community,

As always, it is an honor to serve you as we celebrate the social, emotional and academic development of our children.  They seem to grow up all too fast!  I appreciate your support as we seek ways to enrich each of their learning experiences throughout these vital childhood years.

Did you know?  CMP conducts regular Board meetings throughout the calendar year.  One of the important functions of CMP’s amazing all-volunteer Board is to oversee the fiscal health of CMP.  At the September 10th Board meeting, Karl Yoder (Delta Managed Solutions) and I presented the network’s Unaudited Actuals.  The Board unanimously approved the Unaudited Actuals for each of our schools (CMP-CAP, CMP-EG, CMP-SJ and CMP-SS).

The Board also approved an increase in the Personnel Pay Scale for CMP’s Maintenance/Security staff.  This decision impacts those personnel who serve CMP campuses that are not otherwise served by ‘District’ personnel.

The next CMP Governing Board Meeting will be held at the Shingle Springs Campus on Monday, October 8th.  The Board packet will be posted on our website in advance to the meeting.

Hope to see you there!

A Message from the Executive Director

7 September 2018

Dear CMP Learning Community,

As I enter my 15th year of service with California Montessori Project, I am filled with appreciation for the opportunity that I have been afforded.

Together, we have moved mountains!  Today, CMP is widely acknowledged, and respected, for its integrity, as demonstrated through its personnel, school program and operations.

After thoughtful consideration, my family and I have reached a decision that the 2018-19 school year will be my final year as CMP’s Executive Director/Superintendent.

I have the highest regard for CMP’s Mission and Values, and am deeply grateful for the exceptional staff and community I have served.

My term of service with California Montessori Project has been an extraordinary journey for me --- and, hopefully, for you and your children, as well.

I look forward to our continued partnership in the coming year, as we serve the incredible children and families within our CMP Learning Community.

Thank you for choosing CMP, and thank you, as always, for your generous support.

Warmly,

Gary S. Bowman, M.S.Ed.

A Message from the Executive Director

31st August 2018

Dear Friends,

What an incredible start to the school year!  I am filled with joy to see the excitement on the faces of students, parents and staff!

In this week’s message, I will share a few thoughts about CMP’s ongoing commitment to provide relevant Professional Growth opportunities for staff.

This summer, Teaching Assistants were given the opportunity to attend the Montessori Training Center’s week-long Montessori Overview.  CMP will continue to offer monthly ‘Super Duper Saturdays’ for our T.A.s, as well.

At CMP’s annual network in-service on August 9th, over 400 staffpersons attended a variety of workshop sessions, in addition to presentations by renown speaker and therapist, Dr. Jane Nelsen (“Positive Discipline in the Classroom”).

Message from Principal Kim Aldridge Regarding New Aeries Communications Portal
Introducing Aeries Communication Aeries Logo

Dear Orangevale Families,

We are excited to announce that we will be piloting Aeries Communications this year: a new communication tool to connect our school community.

Aeries Communications is a simple tool that allows for quick, easy, and secure engagement with parents, teachers, and staff. Aeries Communications allows parents to choose their notification preference: email, phone calls, and/or text messaging. In addition, an Aeries App can be downloaded for communication via app notification!

You will receive an invitation to set up your account on August 21st by email. If you would like more information on how the program works, check out this document: Parent and Guardian Walkthrough.

If you have any questions or need to change your contact information on file, please contact your school office.

A Message from the Executive Director Gary Bowman - Executive Director

Dear CMP Community,

It’s only January, and it is starting to feel a lot like springtime (can’t wait)!  Great change is also happening within our CMP Leadership Team.  Please, read this important message, as follows.

After 18 years of service, Dorothy Hilts will be starting a new chapter in her life, as she retires at the end of the current school year.  Currently serving as the Dean II Administrative Designee at CMP-Elk Grove@Elk Grove, Dorothy has been instrumental in the growth of CMP, including the start-up of the CMP-Orangevale campus, where she served as Principal for five years. Dorothy has also served as Teacher, Board Member and Network Testing Coordinator.  Thank you for your 18 years of exemplary service to our CMP Community, Dorothy!

A Message from the Executive Director Gary Bowman - Executive Director

January 18, 2019

At last Monday night’s meeting, the CMP Governing Board approved the 2017-18 Audited Financial Statements for each of our CMP schools. As an essential element required through the “Charter Schools Act of 1992” (Section 47605.6), “A charter school shall transmit a copy of its annual, independent, financial audit report for the preceding fiscal year.”

I am pleased to report that “there were no findings in the prior year.” This marks over a decade of ‘finding free’ audits, which speaks to the level of expertise and integrity demonstrated from within the organization.

CMP 2019-2020 Calendar

CMP is excited to present the Governing Board approved 2019-2020 School-Year Calendar. We appreciate your participation in developing our calendar through surveys sent early last spring and again this fall.

A Message from the Executive Director Gary Bowman - Executive Director

14 December, 2018

I recently came across the following quote by Fred Rogers (aka “Mister Rogers”): “It seems to me that some of us value information over wonder, and noise over silence. And I feel that we need a lot more wonder and a lot more silence in our lives.”

The related concepts of ‘wonder’ and ‘silence’ are prominent within the domain of Montessori methodology. The discipline of silence feeds the spirit and opens the door to a child’s sense of wonder, while contributing to a mindful attitude.

In this holiday season, my hope is that we will all have the opportunity (and discipline) to seek and find that quiet voice that brings a sense of ‘calmness’ to ourselves, our families and our communities.

May this holiday season bring rejuvenation and resilience to you and your loved ones.

Warmly,

Gary
