A Message from the Executive Director

Gary Bowman - Executive Director

Dear CMP Learning Community,

DID YOU KNOW?:  The State Legislature passed the Charter Schools Act of 1992, which authorized the creation of charter schools in California.  In 2000, Wheatland Elementary School District approved a single petition from California Montessori Project, allowing CMP to operate its 4 campuses in the greater Sacramento area, through 2006.  In 2001, AB1994 was passed, requiring charter schools to be granted authorization from their ‘districts of residence.’  In 2006, CMP received separate authorizations from Buckeye Union School District, Elk Grove Unified School District, Sacramento City Unified School District, and San Juan Unified School District, allowing CMP to operate our schools within those district boundaries.

CMP-Shingle Springs received an initial 3-year authorization from Buckeye USD, while the remaining CMP schools received 5-year authorizations.  All CMP schools are now on a 5-year cycle, and, accordingly, work closely with the authorizing districts to meet the requirements for renewal, as established in California Education Code.  While there are many elements included in the charter renewal petition, school districts, historically, are largely focused on student achievement and fiscal solvency.

Currently, we are seeking renewal of the CMP-Shingle Springs Charter with Buckeye USD.  The CMP Charter Renewal Team, led by Principals Kim Zawilski and Lauren Spiller, Development Coordinator Stephanie Garrettson and me, are working closely with the District, CMP-SS staff, CMP’s Central Administrative Team and legal counsel to meet all the required elements.  This is a comprehensive, and consuming, task.  For me, personally, this will be my ninth charter renewal, in addition to the 4 initial authorizations in 2006.

Kim Zawilski and her staff have established a positive and productive relationship with the Board and administration at Buckeye USD, and we are confident that the Buckeye Board will support renewal for our Charter when it comes up for a vote in April, 2019.  The term of the new CMP-SS Charter will be July, 2019 through June, 2024.

For our CMP schools in Elk Grove USD, Sacramento City USD, and San Juan USD, we are looking forward to the renewal process two years from now.  In the interim, we will continue to be vigilant in all areas, including programmatic excellence, operational efficiency and fiscal solvency.

Thanks, as always, for your support!

Gary S. Bowman, M.S.Ed.
